The World Food Programme (WFP) today 21 August 2025 handed over nine vehicles to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to strengthen food security and social protection programmes across the country.
The handover ceremony was attended by senior government officials and WFP officials.
The donation includes five Toyota Prados and four Land Cruisers, valued at USD229,905. The vehicles will be used to improve food distribution, supply chain management, and access to vulnerable communities, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
WFP Zimbabwe Country Director Ms. Barbara Clemens said the vehicles represent more than just transport.
“This is more than just a set of keys; it is a symbol of our strong and enduring partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe. These vehicles will help strengthen the Ministry’s ability to reach communities across the country, to deliver essential social protection and assistance services, and to respond effectively to the needs of vulnerable households,” she said.
She added that WFP remains committed to saving and changing lives in Zimbabwe, building resilience and supporting food security.
“These nine vehicles are therefore an investment in delivery capacity. They will support the Ministry in monitoring programmes, reaching vulnerable communities, and ensuring that national social protection and food assistance systems are stronger, faster, and more responsive,” she said.
Receiving the vehicles, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Edgar Moyo thanked WFP for the support, saying the gesture would strengthen government’s commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind.
“We gladly accept the nine vehicles which will go a long way to support our social protection programmes. Priority shall be given to the hard-to-reach areas in a bid to leave no one and no place behind,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry also noted that WFP’s ongoing technical support has empowered staff in many districts with skills in grain distribution, supply chain management and logistics. With the additional vehicles, the Ministry will now be better positioned to conclude the implementation of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and transition smoothly to NDS2, in line with Vision 2030.
In addition to the vehicles, WFP also donated digital media equipment to support the Ministry’s communications work, helping to document progress and enhance accountability. The handover reflects a strong partnership between government and WFP in building resilience and ensuring food security for the nation.
